2008-2009 soccer: Manchester United's chances of defending the double this season

Firstly i must admit that although I'm an ardent Liverpool FC fan, i believe that with the current form and squad that Manchester United have, they are capable of defending the double this season. In fact, they are already winning 2 championship medals with the latest one after the penalty shoot-out victory over Spurs in the League Cup. In fact, the current Manchester United squad is one of the best and well equipped side including the reserves. From the current League Cup final, one can see the hunger of the reserves as well as the cool penalty kick by the Brazilian Anderson as well as the heroics of the goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Firstly talking about the Premier League, they are currently on top of the table. With the rest of the contenders like Chelsea and Liverpool slackening in performance, frankly i did not see any issue in them retaining the Premiership (although i hate to admit it!) Although Chelsea had the new management in Hiddink, however, i think they still lack the consistency and Frank Lampard's last minute goal in the latest Premier League match clearly shows it. It goes the same to my beloved club, LIVERPOOL. The difference which i believe between Manchester United and their rivals is CONSISTENCY.

Furthermore, Manchester United reaches its peak at the right time which is now. Looking at Liverpool's loss to Middlesborough in the weekend really saddens me. This is make worst by the injury to Torres as well as the contract issue of its manager, Benitez. I really hope that all these turmoil will resolved and Manchester United slips in order for LIVERPOOL to get the title. But frankly, i think the chances are slim and Manchester United will have no issue in retaining the Premier League this season with their current player's form and situation.

Secondly let's talk about the Champions League. I believe this is a challenging one but i still think that Manchester United will have no issue in defending the title as well. However, they need to overcome Inter Milan in the 2nd leg. This will be a tough one as Jose Mourinho will surely have some tricks in his sleeve to ensure that Manchester United will not have an easy task despite the fact that the match will be played in Old Trafford. Watching the first leg, I think Manchester United should have wrapped up the tie especially in the first half.

Nevertheless, it will be more challenging if Manchester United goes through as there are other great clubs like Bayern Munich and not forgetting its English rivals which is Chelsea and LIVERPOOL. Traditionally English teams especially LIVERPOOL plays well the two legged Champions League. However, sad to say is that Manchester United will defend the Champions Legue title if their top players like Ronaldo, Roonet, Berbatov, Van Der Sar avoids injury and plays well consistently.
