The cost of college seems to be getting higher and higher by the day right? Facts show that the average cost of college on a 4 year program has increased over 40% since the year 2000. So what can you do?
What you must do first is consult your high school counselor or an university's financial aid office. Schedule an appointment with that person and hopefully they will be able to help you get the money you need.
They say nothing is free in life, while not in this case! Receiving free money for college is money that you won't have to pay back, instead of getting something like a loan. Usually, this free money comes from either scholarships, fellowships, or grants. Over a million scholarships are awarded each year. There are scholarships based on your academic merit, athletic ability, race, nationality, religious affiliation, relation to a cancer victim, disability, location, and even more! If you're able to do your research and have a little patience, you should be able to find scholarships you are eligible for...just watch out for those scams!
Then there are loans. Loans are usually NOT free money. In most cases they will need to be repaid within 10 years of graduating, but thats unless you qualify for loan forgiveness. Everyone knows that in this period of time, we are sadly in an economic recession. Times are tough and so are our pockets. Let me just give you some GREAT advice....as of RIGHT NOW, START SAVING! Its never to late to save for money for college, after graduating, you can end up having to pay back more than $40,000! Student loans are usually classified as "good" debt. Just like a mortgage or a business loan, borrowing for education can be a smart investment in your future, but too many of today's students; including their parents, are taking a good thing way too far. Do not over invest, as with mortgages, credit cards and most other kinds of debt, most lenders are willing to give you way more money than that you can afford to repay.
Here are some more helpful tips:
* Make sure you're always on top of your schoolwork. That way, you'll keep any scholarships you already have, which will definetly help in the long run.
* Think about jobs you could do from home or campus. Waitressing, Babysitting, Working at a local supermarket, whatever helps.
* Don't do any harmful acts against the law. It's wrong and will get you into tons of trouble which will follow you long after you leave college.
*Don't push yourself as having a skill you don't really have.
*Be confident in your school work, it may seem tough now, but it'll all be worth it in the end.
