Movie reviews: Marley and Me

by Melody Williams

Created on: March 03, 2009

Marley and Me is the best movie I have seen in quite a long time. I work at a cinema and have opportunity to see a plethora of films. This one was able to offer several genres in a heart-touching story. I was unable to take my eyes away from the movie.

Anyone who has owned a large dog, especially those in the Retriever family, knows only too well how spirited this breed can be. I would bet it was less difficult to get dogs as active as Marley to play the part than it was to find dogs that would also follow direction. These dogs played true to their nature and brought wonderful humor and love to the film.

Owen Wilson did a great job playing the part of John Grogan. The viewer had no trouble seeing the passion Wilson had for this movie and for the dog. He played the part so well one would think he was actually Grogan himself. Jennifer Aniston also did a wonderful job playing the part of Jenny, and she too seemed to have a passion for the movie as well as the dog.

Wilson and Aniston created a wonderful life as they showed the growth of their courtship to marriage, and then a family, as they began to have children. As they started their marriage they decided before they had children they should try to take care of a dog. They figured if they could raise a dog then they might be able to handle being parents. Little did they know raising a lab would make rasing children seem like a breeze.

Marley started out like all puppies, full of energy, chewing everything in sight, and eating himself silly. The problem was, however, he didn't grow out of the puppy stage throughout his entire life. He chewed everything he could, including walls, couches, stereo speakers, and anything else he deemed worthy of his jaws. The problem was, he not only chewed everything in sight, but most of it was swallowed too. At one point Marley found it to be an extremely enjoyable game to run from Grogan with a brand new expensive gold necklace John had given to his wife. Ultimately, Marley swallowed the necklace, and Grogan spent several days in the yard spraying the garden hose on Marley's poop looking for the necklace. Fortunately, nature took its course, and the necklace was eventually retrieved.

As the Jenny and John began to have children the house became much more hectic and full. Therefore, they decided to purchase a larger house in a better part of town. When John went to see the house, (with Marley) Marley took a running shot through the front door, out the open back door, and dove into
