Feeling the spirit of someone who is passing on is possible and it takes several things in order to accomplish this. To start those who remain living must have a belief that the spirit continues on after death, The stronger the faith the more likey you are to "feel" the presence and spirit of the recently departed. Of course sometimes the belief does not start until someone close to us dies and then we are forced to examine our beliefs more closely.
In rare circumstances even those who do not have faith in the afterlife can feel the departed and this is usually due to the need of the departed to communicate to this person that there IS life after death. Other ways are for so called "hauntings" which mainly are left over energy or the spirit trying to finish business or pass along information that is important. One possiblity could be that you were not paying attention during life and the urgent need to pass along this information prompts the spirit to try and communicate. Another is the fact that the spirit may not have accepted the fact that their time had come to an end and does not wish to leave due to a close attachment with the living or unfinished business in this world. Though the unfinished business can be addressed on other planes of exsistance not everyone has the faith that there lies a better world beyond this one.
The Essence of the soul can be felt in many varied degrees, as a flash of cold or warmth, sudden calm, internal peace, goose bumps, a feather light touch and more. Also the urgency or need of the spirit to communicate the parting should be considered as well as the needs of those left living to actually "know" there is life beyond this level of exsistance.
In personal exerience I have had the sudden knowledge of a death, a total inner calm while turmoil reigned outwardly, the soft touch of a kiss upon the forehead, and the gentle awakening of a soft goodbye. Each experience has been as unique and differant as the people were in life and all left their own special mark upon my life and exsistance as well.
Can you truly discount the thousands of stories that people repeat and tell of how they have felt or communicated with the departed? Is it wishful thinking, I think not. For while the need to know what lies beyond this life is strong the belief and faith in the fact that someting does is universal in all people, no matter what faith or basic beliefs they may hold dear.
So in essence the experience of feeling the spirit of someone who passed on will remain an individual one and depend upon the circumstances as well as faith, relationship and situation. Anyone can feel this unique phemonina you first have to want to in order to make the best of it and know that the person has truly passed on.
