It seems like 2009 is the year of the science fiction movie. Every month a new sci-fi flick or two is being released in theaters. March has a number of movies. One movie in particular is "Knowing," which stars Nicholas Cage as Professor John Koestler and is directed by Alex Proyas. The film is set to be released on March 20, 2009.
Although the movie setting is Boston in the 1950s, major scenes in the movie were filmed in Melbourne, Australia. The filmmakers, however, try recreating the sitting at various locations in the land Down Under. The movie also stars Rose Byrne as Diana Wayland and Chandler Canterbury as Caleb, the professor's son.
The movie contains many of the science fiction elements viewers have become accustomed to. Professor Koestler discovers a time capsule at his son's elementary school which illustrates the beginning of a mystery he has to solve. As expected, it's not an ordinary time capsule. The contents reveal things that will happen in the future. The professor thinks that they predict the end of the world, and his family plays a major role in the predictions he sees.
Director Proyas attempts to give the movie and authentic vibe as he duplicates Massachusetts's landmarks in Australia. The director uses a digital camera for a few scenes in "Knowing," the first time this method of filmmaking has ever been utilized. This is a tedious process designed to add realism to a movie scene. For one scene in particular, it took two days to set it up and two days to shoot in order to get the anticipated effect.
When the movie trailer for "Knowing" began airing, moviegoers are stuck with a sense of dj vu with recent Nicholas Cage movies. It feels like a mixture of "National Treasure" and "Next." Even thought the plot varies a little, in general, the Academy Award-winning actor is basically doing the same thing. He finds a puzzle or mystery and he goes on a quest to make a startling discovery.
Lately, Nicholas Cage has cornered the market on these types of movies and apparently a lot of fans enjoy watching him in these roles. Thus, people who enjoy the two "National Treasure" movies and movies like "Next" will enjoy this film. However, this year is flooded with science fiction films, and people may be picky about what movie they will see. They may forgo this movie, thinking that they have seen it before.
It's hard to predict whether a movie will be box office gold or lay an egg. Moviegoers are unpredictable. Recently, comedies have been the box office winners for filmmakers, so the March release of "Knowing" may not have the desired result. In addition, the highly anticipated "Watchmen" also premieres in March.
