Book reviews: New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer

Created on: March 02, 2009

"New Moon" is the sequel to the best-selling novel "Twilight" written by Stephenie Meyer. This second installment follows the ill-fated love affair between vampire Edward Cullen and mortal Bella Swan. The plot continues to thicken, with the lovers facing more hurdles and struggles in their elusive search for their happily ever after ending.

On the night of Bella's eighteenth birthday, she gets into another accident and gets almost bitten by Edward's adopted brother, Jasper. Stricken with guilt, Edward decides that his presence in Bella's life will continue to put her in harm's way. As a testament to his great love, he leaves Bella, believe that it is for her own good and promised to never contact her again. In his own words, it will be as if he never existed. Bella disagrees, but after hearing that Edward does not want her anymore, she concedes that there is nothing she could do about it.

When Edward left, Bella lost the will to live. She felt as though life held no meaning and struggled to get through one day at a time. Bella did not even try to fight the helplessness that was engulfing her, she embraced the loneliness with open arms. This is where the character's main weakness lies, her total dependency on Edward and unwillingness to let go. While some might consider this as proof of her undying love for Edward, some see this as an unhealthy way of dealing with a broken heart. She had a life before she met Edward, albeit a very boring one, but a life nonetheless. In her defense, she tried to move on. Bella developed a close friendship with Jacob Black, only to discover that he is now a werewolf and a mortal enemy of the Cullen family. She tried to take a hobby: riding motorcycles. But only because she wanted to subject herself to danger. Why? Because being in danger is the only time she could hear Edward's voice clearly in her head.

Not being satisfied with just riding motorcycles, she tried a more daring stunt: jumping off cliffs. She almost drowned. This is where the excitement builds up. With her ability to see glimpses of the future, Edward's sister Alice thought she saw Bella trying to kill her self. A series of misunderstandings follow, and suddenly Alice and Bella are flying to Italy to save Edward. He found out about Bella's apparent suicide and decides to follow her. He went to Volterra, home of the dreaded Volturi, a trio of powerful vampires who consider themselves royalty. Edward tries to devise a plan to force the Volturi to kill him, and Bella
