After months of cold weather, dull grey skies and bitter winds there is nothing more welcoming than the first signs of spring. Depending on where you live spring can start to appear as early as late February in the Northern hemisphere and Late August in the Southern hemisphere, with the official first day of spring being March 21st (Northern) and September 21st (Southern). The first sounds and smells of spring are something to rejoice, and what better way to do it than welcome it.
Enjoy the fresh air
Open your windows and let the fresh breeze fill your house with the smells of re-growth. The freshness and newness of spring will wake up your household to spring.
Plant something
Take the time to plant a flower, vegetable or fruit. Start it indoors in a pot, and watch it grow as spring draws nearer.
Eat outdoors
Sit outside on your lunch break or take your family on a picnic. Make sure to bring a sweater as the spring air can still be quite chilly. Collect something from your outing and save it for a spring scrapbook.
Hang your laundry outside to dry
Nothing smells better than clothes that have dried in the fresh spring air. Even if you live in a small apartment it is easy to hang up a small clothes line in a window sill or porch. Hang your bed sheets or clothes in the fresh air to dry.
Go for a walk
Plan a time to walk outside. Walk through your neighbourhood and watch for signs of spring, grass turning green, flowers starting to grow and birds singing.
Have a bbq
Heat up the grill, pull out the steaks and bring spring into your dinnertime. Nothing smells more like springtime than a meal prepared on the outdoor grill.
Get some fresh flowers
Tulips and daffodils are some of the first springtime flowers. Buy a bunch of flowers and put them in a vase on your table. Their fragrance and bright color will be sure to put some pep in your step.
Play an outdoor sport
Take the kids out with a soccer ball, baseball or Frisbee. Keeping active is challenging in the winter, so welcome spring with outdoor activities. Look into joining a spring sports team, many neighbourhoods have baseball and soccer team sign ups in late February.
Go to the zoo or local farm
The local zoos and farms are a great place to enjoy and welcome springtime. Check out the web for local farms and zoos, often the birth or excepted birth of baby animals will be advertised. Nothing says springtime more than the birth of baby animals. If you are taking children with you bring along a digital camera and capture your day.
Spring Cleaning
Spring is the perfect time to go through your drawers and closets to get rid of outgrown and unneeded items. Have a garage sale or donate your unneeded items to a charity. While doing this keep your windows open and fill your house with the scents and sounds of spring.
Don't let the awakening of spring pass you by. Take time everyday to enjoy the rebirth and re-growth that is all around you.
