How to make a pine cone bird feeder

Regardless of the season or habitat, natural pine cone bird feeders provide healthy supplemental snacks for feathered friends. Economical and easy to make, bird lovers of all ages will enjoy volunteering time to make these feeders. Once discovered, birds quickly show gratitude by providing song, color, and regular visits to your outdoor habitat in exchange for the donation.

PEANUT BUTTER PINE CONE FEEDERS
Materials needed:
6 large open pine cones
6 twelve inch strands natural jute twine
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup chunky peanut butter
2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cup flour

Directions:
- Tie each strand of jute twine around the stem end of each pine cone
- Mix together peanut butter, vegetable shortening, cornmeal, and flour in large mixing bowl
- Spread mixture over surface of pine cone with the back of a spoon or spatula
- Hang feeders from various tree limbs in yard

BIRDSEED PINE CONE FEEDERS
Materials needed:
6 large open pine cones
6 twelve inch strands natural jute twine
2 cups vegetable shortening
2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
2 cups birdseed

Directions:
- Tie jute twine around pine cones as directed above
- Pour birdseed into cookie sheet or round dinner size plate
- Mix together vegetable shortening, cornmeal, and flour in large mixing bowl
- Spread mixture over surface of pine cone as directed in previous recipe
- Roll pine cone in birdseed until well covered
- Hang feeders from various tree limbs in yard

DRIED FRUIT PINE CONE FEEDERS
Materials needed:
6 large open pine cones
6 twelve inch strands natural jute twine
1 large jar chunky peanut butter
Dried bits of fruit

Directions:
- Tie jute twine around pine cones as directed earlier
- Spread peanut butter on pine cone with back of spoon or spatula
- Press dried fruit onto peanut butter covered pine cone
- Hang feeders from various tree limbs in yard
