Cheyenne McCray is a New York Times Bestselling Author and a USA Today Bestselling Author for paranormal romance and romantic suspense. At the time of the writing of this book she has aproximately seven books published.
In this story Jack Macgregor, the leader of San Francisco's Paranormal Special Forces unit, is facing an enemy who is able to bring down the city using storms to kill. These enemies are naked, but tattooed with magical runes that make them almost invincible in their cloud projections. They kill with ice daggers.
The other side of this romance is Cassia, a D' Anu witch, who is more powerful than her sisters. Both Jack and Cassia have met in other books and other stories, and have become close through many military scrapes, but Jack has never had any sexual escapades with Cassia. What he doesn't know is that Cassia is not only witch, but also comes from the Otherworld (a world that is filled with legendary creatures like elf-like creatures.) While Cassia roams the earth and trains witches, she has to keep herself completely innocent - yes, virginal.
Jack, of course, is a hardened soldier that not sure when the next skirmish will kill him. Unfortunately, when Cassia is getting close to giving in to Jack, she is called back home to become her nation's newest leader. In the process, she must pick a full-bred member of her nation and have her first sexual relations. While is angsting, Jack is almost killed. In defiance of her mother and the members of her nation, she goes back to earth to save Jack.
At that point they become inseparable. Cassia has not resolved the situation and for many chapters fights against her destiny. But she loves Jack and to Jack's disbelief, he loves her too. They confront her mother, who is leader of the Otherworld kingdom, and her assigned first lover. Of course there is a deadline for her first sexual experience. If she doesn't have it, she may lose her magic.
In my opinion for a character, Cassia, who has lived many centuries she seems to young for her "wisdom." She acts more like a young twenty year old woman and does not seem to have the same maturity level as Jack. Because she angsted so much, I had a hard time reading the later chapters. It was really good when action was warming up.
For a mature reader, this book may not be worth the read. For a younger woman or younger reader, it has all the elements of magic, romance, and angst. At least the cover has a really sexy young woman on it. The shadowing man behind her could be the alpha male of her dreams.
