Book reports: Creative ideas for elementary school students

Students often feel worthless because they think their writing skills are limited. Each student can feel good about their work while doing a MGRP.

Oftentimes students are not interested in a topic because it doesn't pertain to them. Rowe, Fitch, and Bass (2001) stress the importance of choosing writing assignments that are interesting to all groups of students within a classroom. If students are confident about their topic, they will be more likely to enjoy writing in the future.

The MGRP can change the way teachers view teaching and learning. They learn a great deal about their students in the process of completing the MGRP. Many teachers are surprised to hear about what their students are interested in when it comes to genres and topics. Participating in this process with students gives teachers a good idea about how their students see the world. Teachers are also exposed to many topics that would have otherwise been ignored if not for the MGRP.

The Multigenre Research Paper is an excellent tool for any elementary language arts curriculum. From a students' perspective, it seems challenging but not overwhelming. They learn to take pride and ownership in their work. Their knowledge of genres broadens. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills improve greatly. Communication and collaboration prepares students for future writing experiences. The Multigenre Research Paper is also teacher friendly. It covers a wide spectrum of required standards for education. It is comprehensive and compatible with any unit a teacher decides to teach. Most importantly, students have fun working on their projects, a feat the majority of teachers appreciate. The Multigenre Research Paper is clearly the answer to teaching research papers in intermediate elementary classrooms.
