There is nothing worse then lifting your backpack on and feeling your knees buckle under the pressure of everything you're carrying, including that kitchen sink. However with a little research and a bit of creative thinking you will be able to use a range of multi-purpose gadgets to minimize that carrying weight whilst travelling. In saying that thou, there are endless multi-purpose items on the market and working out which ones are practical can be a maze. Here is a selection of items that can be found in many backpacks around the world.
Everyone knows the Swiss Army Knife or a Leatherman is the basic all-round multi purpose tool to have with you. Classic models have the simplest of gadgets such as can openers, scissors, multiple knifes, tooth picks, pliers and cork screws. However with recent models, USB devices are also a standing feature and a popular way to store important document copies e.g. passports or insurance policies. It's a basic item that no Traveller, Hiker or Camper should be found without.
Large Gortex towels aren't cheap and beside the normal use of the towel, it can also be pinned up over your dorm bed to keep out prying eyes in hostels. Although they can also protect your feet from foot fungus whilst showering in hostels, keep dirt from your feet when bathing in local rivers, as well as squashing those unwelcome bugs in your tent (if there is no friendlier option).
A head torch is a great little gadget for hiking and camping. It's good to use whilst hiking through caves or along trails at night, however it is also terrific to use in dorms to light up your bed without disturbing everyone around you. Especially when you're reading or have a 3am bus to catch. It may also be used to light up your tent, try hanging it from the middle strap inside and make sure to carry a spare set of batteries for it.
A multi-country travel adaptor is another fantastic gadget that no Backpacker should travel without whilst traversing the world. It's a simple tool that allow you to plug any power using appliance into
