First of all work out the practicalities like, cost and how much time you have to spend in the garden. As you will need to keep it maintained. It's no use you having a garden that takes up a lot of your time if you have a hectic work schedule. Also it's not a good idea to come up with an elaborate garden plan and then find out you haven't got enough funds to see it through.
Work out what sort of things you want to grow. If you like flowers more than shrubs. Or if you want vegetables as well as flowers. You might want to plant a few trees in any case draw up a plan.
View your site and work out what is possible to achieve, and also what is not possible. Having worked out the practicalities you can then put your idea's down on paper and work through them.
Once you have decided on your garden and drawn your plan you can get started. Somethings you may need to seek professional help with. Don't try to do everything yourself. If you are not sure you have the expertise for a particular feature that you want get help.
It can be great fun planning your new garden. Put all your idea's down on paper. Let your imagination run free. But do be careful not to over do things. Then find out when it's to late that you have inadvertently made a border that's too big and hard to maintain.
If you have a small area to make a garden decide if you want a formal one or a garden that is less structured.
If you have a hectic life style and dont have much time to spend in the garden you would be wise to opt for a low maintenance garden. With lots of paving area's you can position plants in pots and containers. You could also add a small pond or water feature.
If you plan on putting in a tree another attractive feature would be a tree seat. This is a seat that goes around the tree trunk. This can be made of cast iron or wood. Also different types of stones and cobbles can be used in the central ground area's.
You want your garden to look good all year round. So make sure to plan for winter as well as summer. You can do this by adding frame work plants such as evergreens. This way there will alway's be something interesting to look at all year round.
When planting you need to think of each season, and also think of colour. Bulbs and annuals are perfect for spring and summer colour. While trees and herbaceous plants provide colour in autumn. In some places herbaceous perennials flower most of the year.
