Tips for learning a foreign language

Knowledge of a foreign language is an invaluable tool. It increases the ability to communicate with those around us, demonstrates an aptitude for learning, makes travels infinitely more manageable and widens employment prospects. However, the actual learning process may seem somewhat daunting at first. Here are some tips on achieving the best results when studying a new language.

The easiest way by far to learn a new language is to live in the country of origin whilst studying. In this way, you will hear the language spoken all around you, every day, and will be forced to speak it yourself right from the beginning. Of course, this is not possible for everybody. However, when searching for a language course, whether in your home country or elsewhere, it is highly advisable to look for an immersion course. This means that the entire course is conducted in the language that you are learning. You, the teacher and your fellow students will only be permitted to speak in the new language. This may seem impossible at first, but it is the best way to kick start your learning and see results quickly.
Outside of your course hours, it is important to study as much as possible. In addition to going over the course content, there are four areas of study that you should practice in between lessons:

The BBC in particular includes this as part of a wide range of resources for those studying foreing languages. Comic strips are also very helpful. They may seem a little childish, but the combination of visual and written material makes them ideal for learners of a language.

Writing: It is necessary to write in order to put the grammatical rules that you have learned into practice. Many languages differ in their spoken and written forms, and it is important to be able to do both, particularly if you are learning for work related reasons. A pen pal is a useful way to get regular writing practice. Ask your course coordinator or teacher, as your language school probably has agreements with other schools who may have students learning your language.

Listening: This is probably the area which most students find trickiest. There can be
