Any diet that cuts out whole food groups like a low carb diet does is not something safe for your body in the long term. People think that cutting carb is the fast way to quick weight loss and that is how low carb lifestyles got their popularity. While there are some positive aspects of the low carb lifestyle such as cutting back on refined sugar, the consequences outweigh the benefits. Sure, cutting out carbs like white bread, rice, and other foods that have a negative effect on our blood sugar levels is something worth looking into, but what about other carbs? Carrots, bananas, and raisins all have a higher carb content, should we eliminate these from our diets? Cutting out fruits and vegetables is all of a sudden "healthy"? This is the world we live in today, where cheeseburgers are diet food and bananas are a diet danger. Come on! The diet industry has twisted our view of safe nutritional choices to the point where our heads are twisting faster than Linda Blair in The Exorcist!
How about the fact that low carb products are often high in saturated fats? The allure of the low carb diet is that once the body burns all the carbs, it begins to burn the fat. That would be great if the body did not need carbs for energy and for proper organ function. A diet of burgers and cheese is not at all healthy, but this is what low carb dieters have been fooled into thinking. Artery clogging low carb foods are not the answer to safe weight loss. When you are on a low carb diet for a period of time, your body runs on ketones which is a dangerous thing. This can cause kidney damage. I know of someone who ruined their kidneys on a low carb diet to the point where they were urinating blood. Their kidneys will never be the same, and for what? To lose a couple pounds? To be "healthy"? Don't even get me started on the lack of fiber! Welcome to constipation nation! Good luck trying to go when you are on a low carb diet, not to mention fiber is essential for healthy intestines. Just one more thing you are depriving yourself of on a low carb diet. Never fear, you can cure constipation with a variety of low carb products out there. Look for the labels that promise "anal leakage" if consumed. Constipation crisis averted! You may have to wear a diaper, but at least you will be able to go!
The safest way to lose the pounds is to moderate your portions and eat a balanced diet. This includes a mix of carbs, protein, and a little good fat. The weight loss may be slower, but it will be safe and in the long run the most important diet is one that will truly make you healthy.
