Book reviews: Men of the Otherworld: A Collection of Otherworld Tales, by Kelley Armstrong

According to the author, Kelley Armstrong, this book, Men of the Otherworld (2009) is a collection of stories she has shared with her fans on her website. She put them together in a collection so that any of her fans could read these stories in the media they like, but originally these stories were free.

As a reader of the women of the otherworld series, I have been very interested in the men who are picked and who pick the strong women in her books. So the stories about how Clay, the one and only child bitten by a werewolf, survived to live long enough to fall in love with Elena add another level to the original books.

Three men are shown in these stories: Malcolm, Jeremy, and Clayton. The first story is how Jeremy was conceived. Malcolm is Jeremy's father. This particular story explains why there is so much hatred between Malcolm and Jeremy. Jeremy is not half-human and half-werewolf breed, but both of his parents are supernaturals.

The biggest part of the book is about Clayton: how he became a werewolf, how he survived as child in the Louisiana Bayou, how Jeremy found him and socialized him, and how Clayton supported Jeremy's bid to become the Alpha. After reading Clayton's story, it is easy to understand why Clayton bit Elena, turning her into the first female werewolf. By the way, if you can, read Bitten. It is Armstrong's first novel and started off this series (Otherworld) with a big bang.

The last story deals with Jeremy, his lady-friend Jaime, and his supernatural heritage that is not werewolf. Jaime is a necromancer that can talk to the dead. The supernatural ladies who chase after Jeremy are not dead, but very much alive and very ripe. Let us say that the last story is quite humorous.

The descriptions are well-written. The dialogue is true to each character. Even though the reader realizes how traditional Malcolm is as a werewolf, the reader can have some sympathy for his psychotic behavior. And of course, the reader can see why the werewolves were not enchanted with the idea of a supernatural wolf since wolves are extremely physical and their only supernaturalness (changing into wolves) is magic tied to the moon.

As I don't normally read short-stories of authors unless I really like them, you should not be surprised when I tell you that this collection of stories are really really good. Also, the otherworld series are really really good. I will really regret it when Armstrong has finished her world of witches, werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural creatures.
