Is the UK justice system really effective?

by Heather Pinchen

Created on: March 01, 2009

I have dubbed the creaking, evil system of so called criminal law the Criminal Injustice Industry.

As George Orwell predicted in his futuristic novel 1984 politicos will be able to get away with murder while Proles are punished most severely. Looking at the farce that became justification for the Iraq war one can see most clearly that Orwell was absolutely right.

As far as I can see the Criminal Injustice Industry serves little purpose but to make the public believe in some concept of retributive punishment dreamed up by a load of over educated old men who have little contact with the lives of most of the population, putting into practice the increasing number of evil laws dreamed up by another load of bloody men sitting in the public school common room that is the House of Commons and inflicting this on the rest of the population who are too somatised by TV, cheap celebrities and other assorted tools used by the politicos to brainwash the masses.

The fact is that if you are rich you can be convicted of murder like Nicholas Hoogstragen or Sion Jenkins ( who married a rich woman while in Prison) and then with enough money and clever barristers you can hope to turn the law to your favour at the notably corrupt Court of Appeal and get out.

This happy opportunity does not apply to the rest of the prison population who are stuck writing letters ( in pencil - no access to computers!) to try and get lawyers to take their cases.

The system stinks and the Criminal Defence community knows it. The only trouble is that while their snouts are lapping up the gravy train of legal aid things are not going to change.

So how can we effect change? Well as the Government flys in the face of Baroness Corston's Report ( Close down prisons) and is planning on building more enormous Titan Style prisons (About the only growth industry in the UK) the odds are that sooner or later the loved ones of most of the population are statistically speaking, going to end up in Jail.

The fact is that the UK has become a police state and the police (bless em) have to fight crime and if that crime does not exist well why not make it up? The depressing fact is that as far as the Crown Prosecution Service goes, even if they lose a case it Counts as a WIN!

Sooner or later the penny is going to drop. Being criminalised can happen to anyone. But unless the Government gets freaked by the tide of public opinion and a general loss of confidence in the CJS and decides that the system is just not fit for purpose and allows a radical overhaul of this jaundiced, sexist and generally evil industry, the increasing odds are that it may just happen to you...
