The Best Time to Have a Baby
Parenthood is one of those jobs that is sometimes thrust upon you, sometimes well-planned and prepared for, and other times simply something you never feel ready for. If you are considering becoming a first-time parent, there are a variety of lifestyle issues to consider before deciding whether the time is right.
Although deciding to have a child is a major life-changing event, with proper consideration and preparation, there isn't any reason why that little bundle of joy can't bring you every little bit of happiness that you are expecting. Below are some topics to discuss before you make this very important decision.
Financial Stability
Although it may not be the most romantic topic, at some point during your discussions you will need to determine whether you are financially stable enough to support a child. Remember that the baby you bring home from the hospital does not stay that small. Soon he will need food, new clothes each year, toys, books, and the list goes on. Look into the costs of raising a child and determine whether you can meet the financial obligation.
Childcare
The topic of childcare is interwoven with the financial responsibility of a child. Will mom or dad stay home and raise your child, and if so how will you manage without his or her income. If you will be putting your child in daycare, can you afford the added monthly cost? These are only just a few issues related to childcare that you need to consider before deciding to have a baby.
Maturity
Although women are physically capable of having children at a young age, there is an emotional maturity that comes with time and experience that makes parenthood less stressful and more enjoyable. No-one can tell you what the magical age is at which it is the right time to have children, but chances are if you still feel too young, you are. Wait for a time in your life when you feel ready to take on this challenge and expect to be enthralled with parenthood rather than resentful of the time that it takes from other areas of your life.
Strength of Relationship
It is important to consider the strength of your relationship before adding children into the mix. Having children in the hopes that it will strengthen a weak relationship is always a recipe for disaster. So is having a child to try and keep a partner from leaving. If you are in a long-term committed relationship in which you have good communication, lots of love, and similar expectations for your future together, you likely have a solid foundation on which to build a family.
These are just a few topics to get you started discussing parenthood. There are a multitude of areas that need to be addressed before you can make this very important decision. And remember, the months and years after having a child can be a very stressful time. Just being aware and expecting difficult times will help you to weather the storm.
