Top Ten Beauty Extravaganza, Here is the load down of the most outrageous tales that have been passed down from generations. These supposedly "beauty tips" are none other than old fallacious legends.
Name and shame time...
1) Shaving does not cause your hair to grow back thicker! Don't listen to anyone that tells you different!
This is of course is a ludicrous suggestion that your hair would grow back thicker if you shave. Hairs that you have shaved off will grow thick at first although they will return to normal afterwards. Just shave as usual, its fine.
2) Eating chocolate will cause your face to break out into SpotsRus!
Another untrue myth, so go on indulge in as much chocolate as you like! The key to being healthy and spot-free is to moisturise, cleanse and generally take care of your skin.
3) The more expensive a beauty product is the better the quality...
Every person's skin is different and only you can decide what beauty product is right for you. Clinique, a premium beauty collection, is not always better than Boots own products. The key to finding out which product works for you is trying out samples and not being naive to marketing campaigns.
4) Toothpaste makes you spot-free!
Using toothpaste to clear your skin of spots is like pouring cooking fat down your kitchen sink; all you will do is cause some nasty blockages! Although toothpaste contains triclosan, an antibacterial ingredient found in spot creams; it will not cure your spots. As toothpaste also contains some other nasty ingredients that can be irritable on the skin and cause blockages. It's better to use proper spot treatments.
5) Cucumber reduces eye-bags
Putting cucumber around eye lids to try and reduce eye bags has little effect. Eye bags are caused by fluid retention, it goes under the eyes because the skin is a lot thinner here. Cucumber cools this area down it and does have a tiny effect but nothing that drastic as it is speculated to do. It reduces the capillary action and the amount of fluid by the eyes; however the effects are not permanent.
6) Darker skin doesn't need sun cream! Rubbish!
Although darker skin has more of a natural protection it is still important to wear sun cream when exposed to UV rays. Always make sure you wear sun cream because the UV rays can have some dangerous health effects on the skin.
7) Skin ages like your mothers...
It is the environmental factors that cause ageing to your skin like stress, smoking, lack of sun cream and alcohol. These are down to you, not your mums genetics.
8) Acne caused by dirt...nope even the cleanest person can have acne
Acne is not caused by poor cleanliness, it can sometimes be inherited. It is caused by a follicles (pores) getting blocked. Sebum (oil) which usually drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria spreads. The key is to use spot treatments and wash as usual twice a day.
9) Dry skin causes wrinkles
This is not true; most wrinkles come from the sun. So just remember to moisturise daily and always wear sun cream.
10) Split ends can be repaired...
If you have split ends, unfortunately there is no way you can repair them; the only to solution is to cut them off and look after your hair in the future.
Well, that's the results of the beauty myths, I'm sure that there are many more legends out there and maybe many more to come. So remember, don't always believe what you hear!
