Pixar has created another masterpiece with the wondrous film that is Wall-E. Set in the not-unrecognisable future, this is sci-fi fun with an ecological message. The animation is amazing and little dialogue is needed to bring the characters to life. Fun and funny, Wall-E entertains in a gentle and beautiful way; whilst the ecological message lurks quietly in the background, allowing you to choose to be receptive to it or to tune it out.
In a world where trash has destroyed the earth, Wall-E is one of the many robots built to clear the earth's debris. But he is alone and lonely as his fellow clean-up machines broke down some time ago; only he remains to clean up the trash. The humans, meanwhile, have been shipped off to space to wait for the big clean-up operation to be completed.
When Wall-E meets EVE, a female android sent to earth by the floating humans to scan for new signs of life, he finds a new purpose in life. Wall-E falls in love and when EVE's mission is successful and she is returned to space, what follows is a sweet tale of love and triumph over adversity that is both amusing and heart-warming.
The magic of Pixar is alive once again in this Disney-Pixar venture. The animation is stunning, the characters are lovable, and the storyline is challenging and reassuring all at once. It is funny to watch the humans lolloping in space as Wall-E whizzes about crushing and clearing the trash, finding a soul mate and slowly falling in love. But it is impossible to miss the ecological message: we humans are destroying the earth. In addition, there are definite digs at the humans in the film: fat individuals who wander the stratosphere, aimlessly awaiting their next fizzy pop or fattening meal, as the robots run the place. There is even conflict between man and machine at one point, questioning our perhaps over-reliability on modern technology.
Wall-E illustrates the beauty of Pixar animations: it is multi-layered and you can choose to enjoy it on whichever layer you want. This film captivates the imagination and stays with you, making you smile whenever you think of Wall-E busily crushing trash, piling these up, collecting little treasures; and his relationship with the female robot EVE will have your toes tingling, it is so adorable.
This is a fantastic film for all the family and one with a real soul. You will want to watch Wall-E again and again.
