Marriage after 15 years is a test of time. I love my husband on so many levels. My emotions for my husband run wild. I love this man, I crave this man, I need this man like a drug. We've been together so long that we have grown up side by side and fortunately have grown together, not apart. Thats how I know that I love him. I have all the signs of being in love. Now what about him? How do I know he loves me?
Some days he makes the signs really easy to read. When he walks out the door for work in the morning I always get a kiss on the cheek or the lips and an "I love you". When he calls me from work on his lunch break, this is usually a daily occurrence, he doesn't forget to tell me "I love you" even when there are others around. These are pretty obvious signs that there is love there. But we all have those moments, days, weeks, sometimes longer that we feel neglected by our spouses. There are times when the signs are harder to read. But when you learn to read these signs, they can be the most rewarding.
My husband and I recently had to spend a week away from one another. Although we spoke to each other several times a day, and we always ended the conversation with "love ya, miss ya", I missed the face to face contact of these words. When we were reunited there was the kisses and the "glad you are home" typical responses. Now I was very thankful for these gestures, these are words that I expected to hear. What I didn't expect would come later in a more public setting.
After being away for a period of time with a large family, grocery shopping is one of the first priorities upon returning. My husband and I set out on this very crusade the night I returned home. As we were turning down the aisle somewhere between the toilet paper and the Gain laundry detergent, I felt him reach for the back pocket on my jeans to loop his finger in, I didn't mind. I thought of this as a sign that he missed me. When we were in the aisle with the frozen pizzas, he bent over and planted a kiss on the side of my neck and with no words, showed me that he loved me while I was gone. When we were in the check out line to pay for our purchases he leaned near me and said in a low voice, "I really missed you while you were gone." His words spoke quietly what his body had been telling me in volumes, he loves me. Body language is a strong way to see the signs that he loves you.
Sometimes in bed he will wrap his arms around me and hold me close to his chest to sleep. Others times we might not be close in the bed, but our feet will find each other and we will play footsies in the bed to relax each other into sleep. He likes to make me smile, it makes him laugh when I laugh, and if I get hurt about something or someone, he gets hurt right along with me. There are people that he has never me,t but does not like anyway, just because they may have spoken a cross word to me. We feel as one, we love as one, we share our lives as one. Life is not perfect at our household. Sometimes we spend the whole day arguing over stupid things. But one thine for sure, even on these days, our feet find each other at night and I wake up in the morning to feel his strong arm around my body. Yes, I know he loves me.
