Vinyl replacement windows represent a significant improvement on classic wood and aluminum windows in several areas: insulating qualities, sound proofing, security, and aesthetics.
Vinyl windows, of all the available replacement windows, have the highest energy efficiency ratings. Double pane vinyl windows not only provide the second layer of glass, but the insulating "dead space" in between the two panes. This insulating factor is important whether your goal is to keep heat in or out, so it is a consideration regardless of your climate. Additionally, many of these windows come with coatings to cut down heating aspect of inbound light (for hot climates), lowering UV exposure, reducing glare, and potential color fade of fabrics in the light of a window.
Sound proofing is another huge benefit of vinyl windows. Most homeowners comment on the noise reduction they experience post-installation. Road noise, local industry, noisy neighbors all fade into the background after vinyl window installation. The double panes of glass and the dead space between dampen sound waves, as does the flexible nature of the vinyl frames. Barking dogs, street noise, loud parties all become a distant memory with properly installed vinyl windows.
Vinyl windows also provide a more tamper-proof barrier than wood and aluminum frame windows. The sturdy frames are well-recessed, with solid locking mechanisms and positive locking methods. The double paned and well-sealed windows are more difficult to displace. While not completely burglar-proof, they are more difficult to open from the outside short of smashing them. They also are much more secure against accidental opening, such as by active young children or family pets. This more positive opening and closing mechanism helps reduce the incidence of children or pets taking an unplanned trip out of a window.
Finally, the overall aesthetics of vinyl windows can add beauty and value to your home for years to come. One of the first items a homebuyer looks for is replacement vinyl windows, knowing their practical advantages and also due to the minimal maintenance required. Other than periodic cleaning of the window tracks, vinyl windows require virtually no maintenance. Often, they flip in for cleaning, turning a difficult and dangerous household chore into a breeze. In the past, vinyl windows were limited in color selection. Now, the sky is the limit when the time comes to decide exactly what hue is needed to complete your house dcor. Current estimates place the increase in home value at between $15,000 and $30,000 for all-new vinyl replacement windows and the absence of them can be a deal-killer for many home buyers.
Vinyl replacement windows, whether you need them for your own family's savings, comfort and security or as a value add-on for the home you intend to sell, are one of a few key items on the must have list for a home owner.
