Wendy's - the simple mention of the name brings to me a "frosty" fantasy of fast food flavor that just can't be beat! I remember as a child being introduced to the first Wendy's in our area. My parents were partial to the "homemade" flavor of the burgers, the freshness of the fixings, and the homey atmosphere of our local Wendy's. It was always a treat, followed by what was my favorite part of the meal: that unbelievably thick, frozen dairy treat that couldn't be matched by any other fast food establishment.
While my tastes have changed along with the color of my hair and the girth of my waist, Wendy's remains one of my favorite "eating out" experiences. Today, I'm especially partial to their diverse and interesting "dollar" menu. For a little over $20.00, our family of six can enjoy a quick and delicious meal slid conveniently into our crazy, hectic schedules.
Now, the crispy chicken and a bowl of their amazing chili are my top meal picks. But the rest of my family enjoy the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers or their perfectly baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, accompanied by a cup of Mandarin oranges, or their oh-so-heavenly, fluffy fries.
Although the selection at Wendy's can fall under the same unhealthy categories as its competitors, they were one of the first establishments to offer somewhat healthier options in the form of salads ( beware the deceptively calorie-laden Taco salad, though!) and the fruit options on their menu. Still, their enduring "claim to fame" are their delicious, beefy, square hamburgers, freshly grilled and loaded with a variety of goodies to satisfy any taste buds.
Throughout the years they have added interest to their burgers with a variety of cheeses and other condiments, but it is that satisfying, uniquely wonderful beef flavor that sets them apart in the kingdom of fast foods.
Another high point on the Wendy's menu for me is the aforementioned chili. It represents the perfect blend of meat (again, that unmistakable Wendy's beef), beans, tomato base and spices that keeps me coming back time and time again.
Being a chili cook myself, I've tried to duplicate this taste in my own kitchen, with little success. A friend recently told me their "secret" was a can of Campbell's French Onion Soup in each pot, but I've yet to duplicate their amazing concoction completely. And so, the siren call of the perfect chili keeps me coming back on a regular basis.
While Wendy's might appear to be lost in the sea of fast food, in reality it's uniqueness and commitment to satisfying and fresh product have carved a solid place in the minds of diners throughout the United States and Canada. And, as they continue to maintain and produce above-average food fast and fresh, they will continue to gather enthusiastic customers looking for something other than your every day Mcburger experience.
