We are all forgetful at times. As we age, forgetfulness can increase significantly, resulting in "Old-Timers" disease and senility. This is especially true when we fail to exercise our minds properly and give our brains sensible nutrition. There are some foods you can include in your diet to give you the best chance of avoiding senility and Alzheimers.
Omegaaaad! It's Omega 3
Omega 3 fatty acids are among the most powerful nutrients for your brain's health. They protect brain tissues and promote healthy development. You can find these fatty acids in various healthy foods including salmon, walnuts and flax seed. Fish is an especially good food for your brain because protein is an essential element in forming neurotransmitters in the brain. Nuts are also an excellent source of protein.
Antioxidants fight Free Radicals
Antioxidants are another important nutrient for brain health. These naturally occurring chemicals combat free radicals in your system, fighting premature aging of your entire body, including your brain. The foods containing the highest concentration of antioxidants will give you the most benefit. Dark chocolate, blueberries, strawberries and oranges are delicious, highly concentrated sources of antioxidants.
Choline: Your Unrecognized Benefactor
You may not have heard of Choline, but it is important to your ability to think clearly and quickly. Choline helps to produce neurotransmitters and will boost the speed and efficiency of your brains functioning. Choline rich foods like Broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower will keep your brain running like a well-oiled machine. You can also get added choline from kidney beans, black beans, peanuts, eggs, cabbage and soybeans.
Folate is Your Friend
Folate was an essential nutrient in forming your spine while your were in the womb. It continues to be important as you age, helping to reduce your risk of stroke. Because stroke contributes to about of dementia cases, prevention is crucial. Folate may also help your body breakdown homocysteine, an amino acid known to be toxic to your nerve cells. You can get folate from orange juice and whole grains like corn, barley and whole wheat bread.
Alcohol in Moderation
Drinking one or two alcoholic beverages a day has shown to increase blood flow to your brain, improving mental performance. Those who regularly drank in moderation showed less cognitive decline with age than those who did not drink.
Be sure to include these foods in your diet for a long and healthy life, that you might actually remember!
