Short stories: The prairie

by Danielle Zinn

Created on: February 28, 2009

As the sun rises, I gaze across the town I grew up in. I've spent my whole life here, 14 years. I can't imagine living anywhere else, but I guess after today I'll know what it's like. Sure we've visited my relatives, my aunts and uncles in other towns similar to this one, but they're only a day's ride away. We're moving a month's ride away. Talk about a move. It's not a small, across-town move, but a big, life changing move. This is my favorite spot. You can see almost the entire town. The stream that runs through the middle, the small townhouses that all my friends live in. I'll see my friends soon, they wouldn't let me go without saying goodbye. I said to wait until the day we move, I didn't want to let the pain of parting drag on longer than needed. My house is way over to the right on a small hill. Small bushes and trees are on the outskirts of town, but on the inside, there are too many people, and no room for plants. I breathe in one long refreshing breath to gather the strength I need for the move from the one I love and adore. God, please help me. I know you promised to be with me always. I need that promise now. I'm so scared about moving, and saying goodbye to friends. But thank you that I'm not doing it alone. You've given me a wonderful family that I can share with and work things through with. Be with us in this next month. Protect us and let us be your lights wherever we go. Amen. Well, I better get home now, Ma's gonna be needing me around the house soon.

I walk through the town I know so well. I see the baker's place, the butcher's shop, and the market me and my friends used to play in when we were little. I'll miss it here, but moving is gonna be a good change for my life. I'll meet new people and God'll be able to teach me so many new and exciting things. As I slowly walk up the steps to the door of my house, I hear Ma calling my name, "Hannah! Hannah! Where are you? I need you to help me to get Laura and Lizzy up. They need to make sure they've got everything ready to go! Haley's already helping me in the kitchen!"

"Okay!" I say loud enough for her to hear. I make my way through the packed up house. We're gonna have to leave some stuff behind, because our wagon just can't fit it all. I go into the younger girls room and can't help but smile. With Laura still sleeping, Lizzy, at the age of 4 was trying as quietly and as best she could to get dressed. Though still young, an independent spirit could be seen in her. Looking at her made me smile.
