When is abortion legitimate?

"Legitimate", a word that is widely open to interpretation and when one puts such a word in front of the word 'Abortion' then you are guaranteed to generate many differences in opinion.

The is no one single answer to this question and if we were to discuss and analyse each and every scenario that could possibly arise to arguably justify an abortion for example in the case of a rape victim, then I am afraid we would be debating this subject forever.

It largely depends on whose shoes you are wearing as to how you respond to this question.

Shoes of Religion

The majority of today's Religions have formed an opinion one way or another on abortion; that it is wrong, it is a sin against god and even considered murder. If these are the shoes then ultimately there is no justification for abortion.

Shoes of Medicine

An abortion is a widely practiced medical procedure, describe by some medical professionals as a minor or simple procedure. In comparison to many other types of surgery such as brain surgery or heart surgery then 'yes' it is a minor procedure, however, these type of surgery do not include ceasing the development of a being.

The medical procedure itself has become unsurprisingly safer and due to the woman's rights movement the number of legal abortion clinics has directly impacted on the unsafe, unsanitary and unregulated 'backyard' clinics which are now in rapid decline.

Shoes of the Scientific Global Thinker

The planet is rapidly over populating to the point where food shortages are occurring in some parts of developed countries, inturn having a direct impact in the cost of living to families and communities as a whole. In this sense one might argue, why sustain a life of that which by some is considered to be nothing more than an undeveloped bunch of cells. If a woman chooses abortion does she even need to justify it?

Shoes of the Politician

Political attitudes towards abortion can be determined by a number of things including political parties' religious beliefs, what the voters want and even the personal life experiences of the politician can impact on policy and law. One thing about wearing the politicians' shoes once you have voiced your opinion on this topic there is no room for a change in opinion.

Shoes of Law

Mostly dependant on how the constitution is interpreted or human rights laws are defined. In some cases law as with politicians can be influence by many external factors.

Shoes of Woman's Rights

At the opposite end of the spectrum when compared
