Science fiction films have always been a glimpse into a possible future and an inspiration for designers for future technology. Science fiction doesn't always come true for what ever reason that restricts science fiction into becoming reality. So here is a list of ten things science fiction predicted incorrectly.
Robots by the year 2000.This is something that was referred to the movies of the 1950's. We were promised to have robots that would do everything from cleaning our houses to being our best friends. It is true true that we do have robots buy they are simple and not completely self-sufficient as predicted.
Cars that fly
Another promise from the 1950's science fiction movies was that in the future we would have cars that could fly. We could take to the skies and fly to any location we wished in a matter of minutes. Of course this has not happened yet. Though there was an inventor who made a prototype of a flying car called the M400 Skycar but, unfortunately the M400 Skycar is still in testing and has yet to see mass production so as of now we have no cars that can achieve flight.
The world would plummet into an apocalypse with the beginning being the Y2K bug.
This was a fad of the late nineties when the Y2K bug was discovered and that a possible crash may happen because of this program error making our computers utterly useless. This of course caused a panic to many of the technology users of that time. So it was natural that this would become a theme of these movies as illustrated by James Cameron's Terminator series. Unfortunately for science fiction the year 2000 rolled around and the Y2K bug was proven harmless.
We would have colonized the Moon by now.
Another 1950's science fiction proved wrong for now. So far there has been no advancement of this idea since the early 1980's. Though NASA has promised that manned flights to the Moon would resume by 2020 but we have yet to see how that will turn out or if it will even happen at all. Additionally NASA claims it can place a permanent base on the Moon by 2025 following NASA's claims India, Japan, Russia, China, and the European Union have claimed they can place bases of their own on the Moon by at least the year 2030.
We would also have Colonies on Mars to complement the Moon's settlements.
Another idea and failure in the same vein of the Moon colonization idea. Although missions to Mars have been growing in number we have yet to see any manned missions to the red planet.
We would have made contact with intelligent life.
One prevalent theme of science fiction is that there is other intelligent life out there in the void of space and we will make contact with them. This has yet to happen if it will ever happen at all, though scientists are optimistic on finding intelligent life we are finding that this may be even more difficult then first proposed.
Aliens will conquer Earth.
Obviously with no contact with other intelligent from outer space there would be no conquest and I hope this is something that will always remain wrong.
Technology will rise up and conquer mankind.
Another idea that I hope will be wrong for the rest of human existence. The idea of technology becoming so advanced that it develops intelligence similar if not better than their human counterparts that eventually rules over mankind has been used since the 1950's and was best visualized by the film "The Matrix" where technology has won the Earth and uses humans as power sources but gives them a virtual reality that seems like reality that gives them the illusion of still being the dominant power of Earth.
We will be able to permanently live in space.
For the time being science fiction is still wrong on this one. Even though it is possible to live in space this has been a reserved pleasure of only astronauts and a few very rich clients and even then it is only for a few months at a time not permanently.
Interstellar Space Travel.
So far we do not posses the technology nor the destination to travel to another planet at this time .More than likely thousands of years from now we will be able to do it.
