Science fiction movies to share with your kids

Created on: February 27, 2009

Many science fiction movies are geared towards older audiences with mature storylines and explicit themes. While there is nothing inherently wrong with these films, sometimes kids want a piece of the scifi action. Most science fiction films like the Alien series or the Predator movies are far too much for children, but some scifi films are not only kid appropriate but also enjoyable for most people to watch.

WALL-E

Pixar's family friendly scifi movie of 2008 is quite appropriate for children of all ages. The story, in contrast with many family films, is a romantic comedy between two robots. WALL-E, the only working robot on a trash filled post-apocalyptic Earth, finds himself in a surprising relationship with EVE, the sleek and modern machine that came from outer space. From here, the two embark on a journey that contains twists and turns, not to mention the downright hilarious scenes. There's action, mystery, and romance in this film, but none of it is too much or explicit for kids. Most of the story will probably go over their heads, but they still will get a kick out of the film. And the ending is sure to bring out a few baby tears from the really young kids, but it is nothing to worry about too much.

Star Wars: The Original Trilogy

George Lucas's original tale of Jedis and Sith Lords is all right for older kids, while the very young children should be left elsewhere. A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return Of The Jedi are classic science fiction staples in the science fiction realm. Many people are familiar with. There are some scenes of arms chopped off and general violence throughout the series, so discretion is advised for small children. However, the overall tale of good triumphing over evil and epic space battles are sure to inspire and amaze children of the current generation as well as it once did for past generations as well.

Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out

This short claymation film by Nick Park introduces the audience to the quirky duo of the cheese loving Wallace and his faithful companion canine Gromit. When the two run out of cheddar for their crackers, Wallace sets out on a contraption that will send the two up to the moon, since everyone knows the moon is made out of cheese. The plot is simple to follow, but one cannot help loving the two characters' relation with each other. While it doesn't last more than thirty minutes, it is still a wonderful film to watch with children of all ages.
