When I first moved away from home to university I spent my first week buying new dvds to watch. While rifling through some dvd's in Virgin Mega-stores I came across the Sex and the City box-set. Shamefully I admit I was a Sex and the City virgin at this point yet having heard so much about this iconic TV show from my friends and magazine reviews I decided to jump on board the bandwagon and purchase the discs. I rushed home actually rather eager to see what all the fuss was about and I gotta say from the first few episodes.... I was hooked.
The television show was based on a collection of essays written by Candace Bushnell for her column in The New York Observer
regarding real life situations herself and her friends had been involved in and was published as a novel. The book was first published in 1997 yet has been republished many times since most recently in 2008 to mark a 10th anniversary and the release of the Sex and the City movie simultaneously. The series and novel center around the lives, loves and oh so gorgeous fashions of Carrie Bradshaw and her 3 best friends Miranda Hobbs, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones and whilst the novel presented them in a certain persona, the television programme tweaked these characters to better suit the story-lines they had adapted from the book. The novel itself really only provided a stepping stone for the TV series, a great stepping stone of course ; however the show ran for 6 series covering many more aspects of the 4 characters lives than the book ever did.
The show first aired in 1998 and instantly became a hit. And the reason the show was such as a success.... quite simply it was new, fresh, exciting, sexy, relevant and most importantly relate-able. You got to watch these characters grow as people from their thirties to their forties and whilst you watched them grow individually you also had the joy of watching their friendships develop and deepen as the show went on. We got watch them make mistakes and go through break ups - something we all go through at one stage men and women alike in our lifetime. We got to see them go from relationship to relationship and being there for each other when it all fell apart. You almost grew to think of these 4 women as your friends... Carrie the fashion savvy Manhattan loving writer who had wardrobe to die for yet who was still searching the one , Samantha the sexy publicist who wasn't afraid to be a powerful sexual woman someone who frowned upon relationships and disposed of
