If it bleeds, it leads: Why does "drama" sell?

I had a "My Space" page and I simply erased it today. Why you may ask, because of the inconsequential drama and pettiness. I have a friend that is focused on bringing awareness to the world issues like poverty, the guerilla warfare in Africa, global warming, "important issues." My friend puts the issues out there in her blogs and she gets a few views, but nothing major. I know this other person that is always spewing hatred....or "drama." Like his blog will be something like "Why I Hate the Police." Do you know how many people will read or comment on what he's writing? Why won't the girl with "reasonable issues" like eradicating the problems of the world get little or no views? However, the person venting about why he hates cops will get alot more views and comments? Why? We have to look at our society. What articles always make the front pages of the newspapers everyday? Articles on what celebrity got caught doing "dirt," political scandals,"gossip," and violence. There's a popular journalism credo which says, "If it bleeds it leads."Which simply means the most violent of crimes, or the juicest of scandals will make front page news in the editing room. Why is that? It is because it will grasp our attention making us pick up the paper, because our minds and eyes, are drawn to the "drama."Sometimes you really have to wonder where we are headed as a society.I picked up a newspaper the other day and front page news was Britney Spears fainting at some night club? Well she beat out the President's funeral, he got pushed to maybe pg 2 or 3.We got so many people with allergies nowadays because of the deterioration of the enviroment. You got scientists stressing that global warming is occuring and toxins are being released into the air.Or celebrites with "causes" protesting the genocide going on in Darfur.Do you know many people are oblivious to these issues? However, they can get a perfect 10 on a quiz featured online in Time magazine asking them to name Tom Cruise's kid, or the lowdown on "team Aniston" versus "team Jolie."Our earth can blow up and people would be oblivious, but hey, at least they will know the name of all 3 of Angelina Jolie's kids? Why does "drama," gossip, and scandal, simply take precedent over other important issues in our community/world? What are we teaching the future generations to come?
