The advent of secret societies to control the masses, or in some cases the world is not new, and it is not based on the things we see on the surface. And as one author referenced above, it is not something that can be held together throughout the hundreds of years of its existance without some type of supernatural entity holding it together as generations of conspirators die off.
Biblically, we know from the prophecies that there will be a time when the world comes together under one ruler. So, there is precidence for the end result... we only need to discover the process and players IF this prophecy has any validity.
Man himself has ALWAYS attempted to rule the world, primarily through military means. This only works as long as the strong, charasmatic leader remains alive. Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, Rome... all of these died out eventually when the one who created it died, or the line of that creator became corrupt or weak.
Then of course, there is ANOTHER form of empire, and it is based on an ideal. The Soviet Union claimed to be a nation of states built on the concept of Communism, but they again used military means and the institution of Secret Police to hold it together through fear. It only lasted 70 years.
So what could be strong enough, and unalterable an organization that could last in its core beliefs and foundations for many centuries, ever renewing itself with followers each new generation? The combination of knowledge, and ritual has that power... and if you dont think it is possible, just look at any organized religion and you will see the same exact concepts involved.
The Catholic church has been able to withstand a complete metamorphasis in Europe over 1700 years to remain a religion that is more important to the people who follow it, than the ideal (God) they are supposed to follow. The Jewish people have followed the Torah for more than 3000 years, and they also stick to the doctrines of the Book given to them by Moses... on through each new generation.
So why couldn't an organization based on these same ideals do the same? With the same goal in mind? It can, and does... and it started with Knowledge, and has spread into a religion.
After Christ died, there were two events that occurred within 1000 years of that event. First, one of the early churches that sprang up were the Gnostics. They believed in the power of knowledge, rituals, and mysticism to form their church. That church still remains today, but isn't as well known as many
