How many times have you wanted to listen to your favorite song while on your morning commute, but could not figure out how to load that song on your iPod? Look no further, as you will be singing from the rooftops! To start, connect your iPod to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable that came with your iPod, and then insert the other end to a USB slot on your computer. If you have a first generation iPod Shuffle, you will not have (or need) this USB cable. Note if you have the second generation iPod shuffle, you will have a dock that attaches to a USB slot on your computer. Simply take off the protective cap on the bottom to reveal a USB end and plug it in to a USB slot.
Once completed, iTunes should recognize your iPod and ask you what you want to name it. This only happens the first time you plug it into your computer, a good suggestion is to name it you first ans last name's iPod (eg. John Doe's iPod). Make sure you have the song(s) you want in the iTunes library. When in iTunes, click "File" at the top of the screen and select "Add to Library...". You could also press "ctrl O" if you have a Personal Computer or "command O" if you use a Mac. Then choose the song you wish to add and either double-click or when highlighted, click "Ok" or press the "Enter" or "return" key. The song should be in your iTunes library now. Now click on the song and drag the it to the little iPod icon with the name you gave it in the left hand menu bar. Make sure not to let go until the name of your iPod is circled. Once done, your song should be on your iPod.
The way shown above is the manual way. You can also have your iPod sync to your iTunes library. You can do this by clicking on the iPod icon in the left hand menu. Near the bottom of the screen, there should be a box in which you can check which says "Sync only checked songs". If you click the box, a check mark should appear. This means your iPod will have all the songs in your iTunes library that have a box with a check mark to the left to the song title. Also, this feature is handy if you add a lot of songs to your iTunes library because iTunes adds your songs you your iPod automatically. It will also add the new songs you add to your iTunes library when your iPod is not connected as soon as you connect your iPod to your computer. If at anytime you find your iPod does not have all the songs you think it should by using the second method, click on the iPod icon in the left hand menu and in the bottom left corner, press the Sync button.
