These days' video games have progressed far beyond what anyone thought they would have. In a growing industry that's over two decades old, video game companies have also evolved, and each game they create have turned into multi-media mega hits that not even Hollywood can compete with.
Societies original stereotype of what gamers looked like was similar to a nerd, someone that never talked to others and didn't have many friends. These days that stereotype has changed, and many people from different cultures accept it as another media format, even the elderly enjoy the benefits of video games.
These benefits aren't just minor; they can range from helping children learn to read, to adults learning new languages. Video games can also be used for medical reasons, for example in Japan, some hospitals have used video games to treat patients with minor or intense memory loses.
Hand-Eye Coordination
It should be no secret that one of the biggest benefits of video games is hand-eye coordination. When person is playing video games and looking at the screen, they only have a certain amount of time to react with their fingers or they lose the game. Take note that certain games are more beneficial then others in this department.
Concentration
This benefit is as equally important to hand-eye coordination and fairly easy to obtain if a person plays the correct game. It takes concentration to play video games and stay glued to the storylines, especially ones like Final Fantasy. Concentration could possibly improve the lives of those that have trouble sitting still or watching films.
Languages/Reading
Another big benefit of video games is the ability to learn new languages and practice reading. Games such as The Legend of Zelda feature tons of dialogs, so the player must read every word to understand what's going on. In addition to that, there are video games out there that are geared towards teaching languages.
Fitness
Last but not least, fitness is a major benefit to video games. There are video games especially designed for learning to maintain healthy body weight and learning effective exercises. In addition to that, there are many dancing games that also help out with fitness, such as Dance Dance Revolution.
Overall there are many benefits to video games, and its up to the gamer to stick with them or stray off of the beaten path into something else. However, video games can never be a replacement for friends, so be sure to have them play too or just put the controller down and just go outside.
