My eyes lit up when I saw this title. It gives me a chance to write another article on my all time favorite band, AC/DC. They've sold over 71 million albums in the U.S. alone. They've released 20 albums, all of which have gone platinum. After 35 years of hard rockin', they continue to sell out arenas and stadiums all over the world. They are true rock royalty. Their commercial success and critical acclaim are not the only reasons why myself and millions of others around the world love AC/DC. I started to follow them in 1991 and I'm sure the story I am about to tell is similar to many other fans of the band.
July 12th, 1991. It was a typical hot summer day in New York. My brother was suppose to go with his buddies to see AC/DC at Madison Square Garden. He decided not to go and asked me to take his ticket. I had heard of the band but I really wasn't a fan. I took his ticket. I went simply because I had nothing better to do. I vividly remember sitting at MSG waiting for the band to come on. Being a fan of the NY Rangers, I closed my eyes and pictured the Rangers playing the hated Islanders. AC/DC was the furthest thing from my mind at that point.
Then, as is the case right before a band takes the stage...the lights go out. A primal roar came up from the garden crowd. People started to scream "Angus, Angus" in anticipation of the guitar player's entrance. When Angus finally appears on top of the stage, the garden absolutely exploded! Angus gave his customary bow and tip of the cap and proceeded into the band's hit single ,"Thunderstruck". MSG was a hysterical frenzy. I'd never seen people react like that. It was like 15,000 people all went crazy in unison. Even though I didn't know the songs, I knew I was going to have the time of my life.
It was an energy level that I'd never experienced. I felt like I was in a wind tunnel with 100 MPH gusts slamming me full on. Everytime I tried to sit down and get my breath, someone would yell at me to get up. The band was amazing, the songs were fantastic and the fans were insane. I left MSG that evening having seen the light. I finally had a purpose, I finally had a sense of belonging.
Whenever I could scrape together a few bucks, I would go to my local record store to buy AC/DC albums. They had 17 at the time so it took me a while to complete the collection. The first album I bought was of course, Back in Black with Brian Johnson on vocals. The clerk at the record store starting telling me about his predecessor, Bon Scott. Bon
