Winning is by far the ultimate goal for any Nascar Sprint Cup series driver. Nothing rewards the hard work and skill it takes to compete in racings premier series quite like standing in Nascar victory lane. While simply winning one race can make a career for many drivers, this article is to celebrate the most winningest drivers in series history. Nascar began better record keeping, and a more structured environment in 1972, which began what is known as the "Modern Era". Prior to 1972, some drivers ran over 100 races a season, while others merely ran part time. Today we will concentrate on the most wins in the "Modern Era" of the series.
10. Jimmie Johnson (40 wins) - While ranking 10th on the list as of now, there is little question Johnson will be much closer to the top when his career is over. Jimmie has won the past three Sprint Cup Championships with a combination of driver talent, a great crew chief and team, and one of the best car owners in racing.
9. Bill Elliott (44 wins) - When it comes to popularity, few have had more fans than "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville". Elliott dominated the series in the late 1980's, while also setting speed records at Daytona and Talladega tat still stand today (due to restrictor plates). Still in a part time role as of 2009, Elliott has a chance to move further up on the list.
8. David Pearson (45 wins) - The Silver Fox, David Pearson, is one of the greatest drivers of all time. Pearson only raced full time for three seasons in his career, and not surprisingly, won the championship in all 3 of those years. Nobody can say what Pearson could have accomplished had he ran a full career, but even as a part time driver, he ranks 8th on the modern era wins list, and 2nd with 105 wins if you count the statistics before 1972.
7. Bobby Allison (55 wins) - Bobby Allison won 55 races during his Sprint Cup career, including the 1988 Daytona 500 by beating his son, Davey Alison. Bobby was a member of the "Alabama Gang", a group of racers from Hueytown, AL. Bobby is considered one of the greatest of all time, and certainly was a threat to win during his day.
6. Rusty Wallace (55 wins) - Rusty Wallace was a fixture in Sprint Cup racing from the 1980, up until his retirement in 2005. In his prime, Rusty was a threat to win every week, and also one of the most hated drivers in the sport. Among the tracks Rusty dominated during his career, Bristol was the site of many of his most memorable wins and races.
5. Richard Petty (60 wins) - The King of
