Did the "Amityville Horror" really occur?

Recently produced horror flicks are said to be based on true events, but they are nothing more than loosely based incidences or maybe even not based on any one true event but multiple events combined in one. The movie moguls are hyping the whole feel of the movie, so consumers will be sure to check it out at the movie theaters. Horror flicks are a dime a dozen, and just to spice things up for the viewers, studios need to approach marketing at a new angle to have their movie differentiate from their competitors, and knowing a movie is based on a true event perks the interest of the viewer. Personally I'm a huge fan of horror flicks, but I never do take the whole "based on true events" approach seriously. You remember the movie "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?" I knew a few people who actually believed there was a psycho family who went out after innocent victims in Texas. In reality the movie was based on the serial killer Ed Geins, and he if you knew his history, you'll know he wasn't part of some maniacal family, but all the evil deeds he committed were done by himself. Horror movies will be horror movies, and don't expect it to be true verbatim. It hardly ever is. On the positive note, if done well, you get a good scare out of it like it's intended to do.

Would the movie, Dark Knight, have been as successful if Heath Ledger hadn't died?
