Tips for avoiding fires in the homes

To keep your family safe from fire consider the following

Service faulty heating appliances, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves and heaters and damaged electrical wiring cause fire.Clean and service boilers and heaters
Chimneys get dirty from combustion deposits that can fuel fire. When using the fireplace, always burn hardwood logs;because softwoods like pine or cypress clog chimneys. Burning papers and branches release burning embers that could ignite the roof. Cover the fireplace by a sturdy screen to keep hot embers from jumping into carpet and wall hangings.

Do not to place heaters where they can be knocked over or stepped on. Keep heaters away from clothing, paper, furniture and other combustibles.
Refuel stoves and lanterns and generators after they have cooled down
Allow air space around the TV to prevent overheating. If it doesn't work right, it can be a fire danger.Repair all faulty electrical cables ,switches, sockets and fuses.

Candles cause home fires especially when used during power black-out and festivals.Never leave burning candles unattended even for a short time. Extinguish all candles before going to bed or leaving the room. Discourage children from keeping or using candles or incense Keep candle flames at least three feet (three rulers lengths) away from anything that can burn, decorations and wrapping paper. Always use stable, nonflammable candle holders (such as ceramic or glass). Use a hurricane-lamp glass chimney around a flame Place lit candles where they will not be knocked (by children and pets and others) down or blown over and well away from drapes, blinds and other materials that can burn. Store candles, matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children.

Make sure your sleeves and other clothing and hair does not get into fire and whatever you are cooking Wear tight-fitting clothing when you cook. Incase your pan catches fire close it with a lid and never sprinkle water. If cooking oil starts to smoke, turn down the heat. Don't throw flour on the fire.Make sure the kitchen floor is not wet and slippery. Never smoke in the house especially in bed and always make sure that cigarette butts, cigar and pipe ashes are completely extinguished before being disposed.(and not into kitchen dust bins)

Design a home fire escape plan of a easy-to-open window and door for every room; practice using them. For rooms upstairs; provide an escape ladder or rope.Keep exit routes and corridors clear.Establish a central fire assembly place outside
