So, your interested in learning the martial arts? That's great, but where do you start. Well let me help you figure that out. There are many schools and many different styles in which to choose from. There's Tae Kwon Do (itf/ustf or Olympic), Karate, Kenpo, Kung Fu, and the list goes on and on with many I wont even try to pronounce. I myself while in high school in Rainier, Oregon studied itf/ustf Tae Kwon Do under Master Dan Huntington out of the Longview Tae Kwon Do school in Longview, Washington. I also practiced a little of a couple of others for example Kung Fu with some friends that have taken it and then Keno at the recreation center in Laramie, Wyoming while I was attending school there.
There are many benefits to taking up the challenge of learning the martial arts. Firstly for health reasons which is a great thing all by itself. You will learn to stretch so you don't hurt your self while training which works for you out side of training as well. Students will also learn to control there breathing and proper technique for different attacks and blocks. Secondly it is also great for self defense. Which is just about a must need any more with over crowding and criminal activity on the rise for most part. Third it is also a sport. I really enjoyed attending tournaments as well as other events that can be found. Family type training camps, demonstrations, work shops, etc. You see it in the U.F.C and also in the Olympics. The above mentioned has just been a small hand full of examples. There is so much to learn and it can be loads of fun.
The first thing you need to do when choosing a martial art is to grab a phone book, or get online and see what schools are in the area you would like to stick with. Make sure you write down addresses and phone numbers. Once you have this list, start at the top and work your way down contacting each one of the schools to find out dates times and so forth. This will save you time, money and hassle since all the schools have different schedules. Most schools have separate classes for youngsters and adults. Those can some times be on different days or one after the other. Which might be a factor if you and a child is doing it.
Now that you have your list and schedules , its time to go pay a visit to the different schools. Your game plan is going to be the same for each school you go to, so don't stress. To find out if this school is right for you it is important to show up a little early before a class starts so not to interrupt
