ME, DAVID AND THE BOYS
He is the atypical model
For the long-haired revolutionary
Of the Sixties
His was a voice lost and disillusioned
By the Seventies
He found his strength...
Then did some time
For life lived much too fast
To the Eighties
Of the three on stage tonight
I would have said
It was him I liked
The least
Yet, when their voices blend
It is his, that is the richness
They've all gone a bit toward broad
And bald
It comes and goes with the age
And I find him downright entertaining
Taking time to talk to me
And the other six or so thousand
Seated here
And when their voices blend
His is the one that ties the other two
Together they fill the canyon with songs
We all seem to know the words
I become afraid of singing too loudly
But we have all, always... sung together
And of the blended voices
His is the one encouraging ...helping
Each of us become part of the magic
I find myself watching him closely
Standing in the thirty-fourth row
Binoculars fixed as he watches his mates
Performing solo... on stage alone
He wanders wing left
What's this? ...it's his wife
They embrace and exchange smiles
Clearly... the same smile of love
He has shown us all
As the high pitched Brit
Sings of love and lost causes
Side by side they look out
Across Columbia ...as the sun sets
The gravely-voiced guitar player
Sings his way through his politics
From yesterday ...to today
The man looks out at the gathering
He points ...and waves with a wink
At me caught watching
A private moment shared
Then he moves back to the light
To tell of loss and discovery
With that voice that blends the best
Of pain ...and joy
The encores done, the time is gone
I find I like him better
For the life he's found
Filled with pride for his pursuit
Contentment in his companions
And a joy for living which...
When their voice blend
He gives to us all
