In current economic times, we all need to be prepared to get a pink slip. There is no such thing as job security these days. Thousands of employees are getting laid off weekly, according to published news reports.
If you are one of the unfortunate victims of this economy who receives a pink slip, consider throwing a fun pink slip party. This is a great way to blow off some steam, and to say a proper goodbye to other colleagues who also got laid off from your company.
Below are some ideas to make this event festive, in light of a bad situation.
* Have lots of liquor.
As long as there are designated drivers, why not have lots of liquor and pour everyone a really stiff one? After all, you are carrying extra stress and worry, so why not have some drinks to take the edge off a bit?
Alcohol can be fun, when consumed in social settings. In this case, it may loosen everyone up, and perhaps temporarily lift people's spirits.
* Have a dart board with your former company's logo on it.
It's hard not to have some anger when laid off, particularly if you have done a good job and been loyal to the company. You are likely not alone in those feelings.
So, what could be more fun than throwing darts at a dart board that includes a picture of the company's logo for the bull's eye? A game of darts can also take people's minds off of their worries.
* Tell funny stories about work.
While this may not be appropriate, given how badly people are taking the situation at hand, it is an option. Sometimes it's fun to talk about the elephant in the room.
Maybe if people tell some funny stories about some of the not-so-pleasant things about their former jobs, then it can lighten the mood and help them gain perspective.
* Trade contact information for networking.
One of the worst things about getting laid off is that helpless feeling that you have been left on your own. It feels like you have been cast out of a family, and in some ways, that is true.
Why not ease that feeling by creating an easy way for guests to trade contact information? That will help all there have a way to keep in touch and to network.
* Take goofy pictures.
Why not take some goofy pictures, and then share them online with each other? That way, you can have some fun mementos of former co-workers.
* Create a positive ambiance, with light music.
One way you can help people feel better is to play some happy music. Consider ABBA or Journey. Play "Walking on Sunshine." Go for some of the sing-along oldies, as these are always a party hit.
Furthermore, create a positive ambiance through some decorations. Perhaps you can include some homemade posters of quotes that you like, including some of the sarcastic ones about work.
* Give lots of hugs.
Getting laid off is emotionally tough. Be sure to give lots of hugs and encouragement to your guests, as that is what they really need. And, by being supportive for others, you will find yourself feeling somewhat better, too. Remind yourself and others that the road to success is not a straight line, and who knows what is around the corner for each of you?
