When it comes to choosing the perfect belt, it is fairly obvious that you should consider the clothes you intend on parterning with it. However, there is also another very important consideration and that is your body shape. The right belt will play up your figure strengths and help to downplay areas you don't want people to focus on.
Figure conscious belt selection for different body types:
Large bust
When you have large breasts they already shorten the length of your body so you need to avoid wide waist belts which will shorten your upper body further. Instead wear styles low slung on the hips.
Pear shaped
Women who are fuller on the bottom half should avoid low slung belts that hit anywhere around their hips and thighs. This would be drawing attention to your fullest area. Instead choose belts which highlight your tiny waist. However, make sure that you don't wear the belt too tight around your waist because this might highlight the difference between your waist and hips too dramatically.
Long waist
Women who have a long waist can go all out with belts because they will help reduce the length of your waist making you look more proportional. You can wear wide waist belts or the trendy style of combining multiple skinny belts.
Short waist
If you have a short waist a belt is likely to detract from the length of your waist even further. Therefore it is advisable to wear belts lower down then your actual waist to try and create length. In addition try to pick a belt in the same color as your top so that you create one smooth line, rather then a stark contrast.
Full figured
If you have a full figure then the belt you choose should be in proportion to your size. A skinny belt will get lost, whereas a bigger structured belt can look good.
Complimenting your outfit
The color, cut, texture and level of formality, all dictate what sort of belt will suit your outfit. For example, an over sized western belt would not compliment a little black dress, but it would look great with a dressed down pair of jeans. For special occasions silk ribbon and diamante belts often look stunning. You should also consider the season, for example a raffia tie belt would look great in summer, but a suede belt might look better in winter. Typically, a medium width, neutral colored leather belt, with small buckle compliments many outfits. However, sometimes the unexpected can work, for example a wide structured belt may give an edgy look to a lace blouse.
Finally make sure you select a belt that fits you correctly; they come in a range of sizes not one size fits all. Remember that you can always have extra holes punched into belts to make sure they are a perfect fit. So if you are debating between two sizes consider going up a size.
