How to find reliable band members

When starting a band, the hardest part to do is find reliable and willing band members who share the same enthusiasm and commitment that you do. You want to have people who share similar musical ideas and values as well as if for some case, something bigger in the long run were to ever happen to the band, they will be ready to make the necessary commitments. There are many things you can start doing to help get the best group together for your band.

The first step when finding reliable band members is to hold auditions for opening spots in the band. The easiest way to go about this is to put up signs around your school or neighbourhood, or today, even on Facebook or MySpace that you are holding auditions. In this poster you should include the instruments and positions available, what kind of musical style you are going for, some musical interests, and some contact information.

Before the person in question plays a single note, have them fill out a questionnaire about themselves. This can help you find out more about the person's likes and dislikes, different musical influences, music equipment owned, availablitiy for show and rehersal times and past musical experiences. If they can sell themselves and they have similar interests in a band setting as you do, then you're on the right track. Next, have a conversation with the person. Try to ask them questions that make them feel relaxed and get to the point of what you're looking for in a particular band member. This is a key aspect of a band member because you want to be able to not only work with the person on a musical standpoint but also be able to get along with them as a friend.

You then want to see what kind of chops they have! Remember, if the player is not quite up to the the caliber that you are looking for, doesn't mean they are a definite make it to the "No" pile. If the person shows real enthusiasm and commitment, they will be committed to playing and being the best player they can be. During the audition, you also want them to try and use their own equipment and instruments. This will also affect you reliability of the member because you can see how they present themselves on a "live" stage, as well as seeing how much control they have over their instrument and set-up. The more they care about their equipment and accessories the more they will want to make the best sound for their band!

Lastly, before making any commitments, make sure they are in it for the right reasons. The key to having a successful band is having people who are passionate and want to work for the betterment of the band. This means, taking time out of their schedule to commit to band practices, lives shows, and even promoting the band. Also, if they can contribute as a collective whole for different goals such as recording or purchasing band merchandise. Overall have fun with your band! The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy making music with people you want to do that with. If you can create this within your band, you'll be rockin' around the clock!
