Dressed for success: Leading by example

Businesses and corporations generally do not have a precise written policy for their employees that absolutely defines the head to toe attire and grooming practices that are acceptable. New employee handbooks will generally state, "Business Attire", in the dress code section. However, in a society with ever-changing fads and trends, there could be some confusion.

Appearance will have an effect on how a person is perceived during an interview, by management, fellow employees, and business associates. This does not necessarily imply that a female employee, for example, should dress in Vera Wang creations or carry a Prada handbag; in uncertain, economic times an overwhelming number of women in the workplace would find that impossible. Maintaining good grooming practices however, particularly for those in supervisory positions, will set the standard for all employees in the office environment.

Cleanliness is always the first step in looking presentable. Children learn good grooming practices from their parents when they are very young. When parents provide proper hygienic training, the practice will generally carry through to adulthood. Clean and pressed clothes, without rips or stains or revealing styles, freshly washed hair, styled so it does not hang in the face, brushed teeth, simple, light makeup, a light splash of cologne, and jewelry worn in moderation will convey a professional appearance.

Spending a fortune on an expensive wardrobe isn't necessary. Consignment shops have racks of stylish business clothing that can be purchased for a minimal cost. Garage sales in high-end neighborhoods can also be a supplier of great designer clothing for a fraction of the retail price. Clipping coupons and paying attention to sales at retail stores can also be a money saving approach to dressing professionally on a budget.

When purchasing business attire, shop for items that can easily be mixed and matched; this strategy can be applied with men as well as women. Basic suits in navy blue, gray, and black are wardrobe essentials. Men can change the look with a patterned shirt and tie. Women can dress up a basic suit with a contrasting blouse, jewelry, scarves, and belts.

Jewelry items should be chosen carefully. Save the shiny, ornate pieces for the weekend. As well, makeup should always be applied lightly in neutral shades. Respect others in the office who may have allergies to heavy scents, and apply body spray or cologne very lightly.

Businesses that allow "business casual" dress standards may find it necessary to define the exact criterion. Although Levis and flip flops are generally not allowed in a business office, rules should be determined as to the acceptable length of capris, types of sandals allowed, and if t-shirts with logos or other screen-printed items should be banned.

Although one's work will speak for itself, presenting a professional image is critical; it conveys how seriously an employee takes the job in its totality. Each supervisor or manager should take pride in their appearance setting an appropriate standard for their staff.
