Any interview is nerve racking, however interviews for design jobs can be a particularly nervous experience, due to the critique on what could be seen as personal style. These types of interviews require a level of confidence, so try to remain positive and remember, the interviewer will expect a certain amount of nerves. Expect to be asked questions about both yourself and your portfolio, they will be interested in you as a person and your attitude towards design.
Before your interview do some research on your employer, it is always a good idea to go in armed with some background knowledge. They may even ask you what you like about their work and what your favourite examples are. If so you are well equipt to answer these questions and the employer will be impressed with your interest in their company.
Some common questions you may encounter are:
What are your strengths and weaknesses when designing?
This is a common question even in non-design interviews. Try not to fall into the trap of being too negative about yourself, perhaps give an example of a time when you made a small mistake but recovered from it, or how you enjoy some aspects of graphic design more than others. The employer is looking for someone who can learn from mistakes, and remember not admitting to any flaws may sound suspicious, nobody is perfect.
Who is your favourite graphic designer/company?
The interviewer wants to know more about who or what inspires you. This should be a pretty straightforward question, but if you are stuck try looking at graphic designers who's style is similar (not the same) as yours so you are able to talk about how they influence your work.
How well do you cope with criticism?
In the art and design world criticism is experienced often, whether it is constructive or not. You must demonstrate that you are able to accept and take on board advice from others, whilst still being able to defend your ideas and work. Some of the criticism experienced will be subjective and be due to a difference in personal taste, in these cases you must be able to defend your work without becoming aggressive.
In your opinion what is the most important part of the design process?
This is a chance for you to comment on what you think makes a good piece of design. Explain why you think they are important and what element you most enjoy.
Throughout your interview you will be asked to explain examples of your work, confidently talk them through each stage from thought process to the final piece. Expect to be critiqued and only choose to present work that you are passionate about. Many of the answers you give will be tailored to you and your own opinions. Above all be enthusiastic about your work and remain calm under pressure.
