To me the SCA or Society for Creative Anachronism is a chance to explore the ideals of the middle ages without the hazards and inconveniences of having lived it.
The SCA is a non-profit educational group whose purpose is recreating, researching and educating about the middle ages from 600-1600 ad. There are chapters worldwide with tens of thousands of members. (For more information see SCA.org)
I've been playing for just under two years now and in that time have made some amazing friends, learned news skills and been able to serve my local group and my community as a whole. I've had the privilege of serving the past four queens as a Lady-in-Waiting, taken classes on everything from soapstone mold pewter casting, silversmithing, embroidery, lucet weaving, sewing, Dante's Inferno, calligraphy and illumination to story telling and bardic arts.
As with any hobby, you will find what you are looking for. For me I have found a society that encourages chivalry, education, honor, service and strength and friends that will last a lifetime.
