Everyday we get to meet a lot of people. But it doesn't mean that these people that we get to meet everyday could be considered as our friends. Admit it. We don't like all these people and neither are they to us. It's not all the time that we should give-in to other people's wants. It's not all the time that we need to adapt in order to get ourselves accepted. Acceptance like respect should be earned and not imposed.
Remember what the great play-write Euripides had said? "One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives." It's way better to have a small group of friends that we could feel very at home with than to have a large group of friends when in reality, we can't even keep in touch with all these people. Most of the time, quality matters more than quantity does. Friendship is not an exemption to that rule.
Personally, I don't have a long list of friends. And I am happy, contented and would like to keep it that way. Making friends for me is not a numbers game. Although it's never a wrong thing to get our selves acquainted to a lot of people but don't you think it's more than enough to have a small group of friends that you could tell how much you hate your boss or how this boy or girl dumped you, friends that won't find you gross if you like eating your spaghetti by hands?
Let's just say I'm fortunate enough to find this set of people. Currently, I have 5 real friends. Friends that wouldn't mind if I'd drop by their houses and grab some lunch straight from their fridge. People who don't only know me but also cares about my family. Friends that were their for me when I failed my licensure examination. Some few people who wouldn't mind if I feel sappy today and unreasonable the next minute. People who knows how to deal with my predictable unpredictability.
I've always believed that human as we are, at one point in our life, we wanted to feel that joy of knowing that we "belong" in a certain group. A group that we could share all our likes and dislikes with. A group that would accept us in every sense of the word and not just because they have to. Unfortunately, more often than not, only a few people could understand the true us. Not everybody could understand why we would prefer to eat ice-cream on a rainy day. Not everybody could comprehend why we don't laugh at their green jokes. Not everybody would take time to sit with us and talk about non-sensible things just because we feel like it. Not everybody could understand why we like wearing those blue jeans and sneakers at work. Not everybody could appreciate our very-well-burnt-chicken- barbecue. Not everyone could understand, comprehend, and appreciate us: Only these people we call as friends. And more often, there's not a lot of them.
However always keep in mind that although there maybe a few of them, they are more than enough.
