Once you've made the decision to stop smoking, you have to start thinking about your options. Whether you are stopping for health, financial or for another reason, quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things that you will ever do, but the benefits are endless. Firstly, you have to really want to stop - it can't be because someone else wants you to. You have to get to the stage where you hate cigarettes, where you can see that they are ruining your life. And then and only then can you stop smoking. Then, you have to decide how you are going to stop. Willpower, patches, gum, hypnotism - are all popular options, but you have to decide what is the best option for you.
A year ago I became a non-smoker, and I haven't had a cigarette since. Before that I had given up a dozen times, but I always ended up smoking again. At a party people would be smoking around me and after a few drinks I would want one too, another drink and I'd be begging a drag or a cigarette from someone. And then one cigarette would turn into social smoking, which would turn into full time smoking again. Quitting smoking with gum, or patches, requires a lot of willpower, and some of us just don't have that in abundance. So when my sister-in-law said she wanted to get hypnotised to stop smoking I thought it was worth a shot. I was quite sceptical as I didn't really know much about it, or really believe that it could work, but I decided to go along anyway.
My sister-in-law knew a hynotist, but you can find them advertised in different places. You may find them in the yellow pages, do a search on the internet, hear about one from other people, or you could even ask your doctor. It's worth researching into it to find someone who you can really trust. They don't tend to charge that much and compared to spending and endless amount of money on gum, patches, or cigarettes - the one off payment is really not so much.
Once you've found a hypnotist, make an appointment, smoke your last cigarette and prepare to become a non-smoker. The session was about half-an-hour long, and really wasn't very stressful. You sit on a chair, some relaxing music is played in the background, and the hypnotist asks you some questions about your smoking habits and why you want to stop. Then she tells you to relax, talks you into a relaxing trance, and guides you through some imaginary smoking scenarios. You wake up, and really don't feel any different - except all I could think about were cigarettes and not being allowed
