<?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /> My Time
Before the coming of daylight
While the creatures of night still stir
I awaken refreshed, energized and emboldened
With creative thoughts all a-blur
In the early years of my childhood
I just lay awake and listened
To the sounds of our sleeping household
As moonlight, through rips in our night shades,
Sparkled, twinkled and glistened.
Throughout my pre-adolescent years,
Being trusted with grown-up chores,
I took pride in firing up the pot-bellied stove,
Before anyone else awoke,
Without disturbing their restlings and snores
With our main room well-heated
And wash-up water set to boil,
I nestled into my favorite corner
Free of any more morning toil.
As the rest of "My Time" elasped
I read, I thought, I planned and I schemed
I wrote, secretly, of the things that I dreamed.
Into adolescence, into High School and beyond
"My Time" became precious to me
As the time for home work, self-reflections and decisions
About the person I dreamed that I, someday, would be.
Now, after decades as a husband, a father and a teacher
"My Time" continues to allow me,
While the household slumbers in peace,
To enjoy that precious "Still Point"
That is increasingly hard to reach.
