A career as a homemaker

The term "homemaker", has taken on a whole new meaning, since its inception. Many prefer to use it in preference to housewife or house husband, as it includes both male and female, in terms of activities (instead of roles that are normally defined by gender or marital status).

In the past, the role of homemaker was predominately filled by women. And, in some cultures or societies, it is perceived as the natural role for women. At one time the term "domestic engineer" was used, but has grown out of favor. Many felt this term was used in a derogatory way, just as the term housekeeper.

In today's society, the role of homemaker is filled by a person or persons who manage the household. It is not only the stay at home mom or dad, but also includes those who work outside of the home.

When we see an add in the paper under "help wanted", for homemaker the primary purpose is to hire someone to care for the home, including but not limited to the children. They are seeking a person who will be capable and willing to run errands, cook, clean, and make sure the home runs smoothly.

In earlier decades, young women were taught skills in homemaking. They were required to take mandatory courses offered at local schools, such as cooking, sewing, and home economics. Today, women and men are busy with jobs outside of the home and are given a choice to hire someone to assist with caring for the home and or children.

Generally, the homemaker is given a budget, to be used for purchasing food for meals, treats for the children, and basic necessities. They are required to utilize their mathematical abilities to keep that budget balanced and not to exceed the alloted amount. And some of the prerequisite for the position may require a degree in business or mathematics. Another prerequisite might be a degree in early childhood development.

Times have changed significantly over past decades. Being a homemaker was a requirement for a wife. It is now revered as a status symbol and highly respected. Both men and women who assume the position are skilled in many areas and can manage to balance their life with work, home, and outside activities. They are required to provide references, and often a background check is run. After all, this person is going to be inside of your home, taking care of your children.

So when you are faced with the decision to hire a homemaker or not, take care in choosing the correct person. You will need to hire someone you can trust with your most treasured possessions. There are a lot of highly skilled, honest persons who are willing and able to assume the role. Take your time and choose wisely.
