Movie reviews: Outlander

James Caviezel is the protagonist of the science fiction movie called "Outlander" that was released in 2009. The movie gathered a variety of reviews. Some claimed it is nothing more than a B-movie and some that its special effects and story are combined in a unique way that gives a remarkable result.

Outlander is, in few words, a cult film that narrates a battle between aliens and Vikings. A spaceship suddenly crashes in the imposing fields of ancient Norway. Kainan, played by James Caviezel, surfaces from the debris. But he is not alone. He unintentionally releases a terrifying, gigantic monster, looking a lot like a dragon, called Moorwen that seeks for blood. Moreover, that vicious creature is responsible for the death of his family and the extinction of his own civilization.

Moorwen has already killed many Norsemen villagers and has devastated some of their villagers. Kainan, who is an alien too, but looking exactly like a human, learned the human language from his computer and asks Vikings to aid him to seek and destroy the creature. Nevertheless, the villagers are not that willing to help him right away, because they think that he is the main reason for all this. That is why they take him as a prisoner. But when the going gets tough and the dragon is about to eat and destroy everything, they turn to him for help.

In between this mess, we have a love story too. Freya (Sofia Myles), the daughter of the Viking king (John Hurt) is about to marry the second in command. But, she is not willing to do so because he is simply a savage. In addition, she likes Kainan. That complicates things a lot, don't you think?

Howard McCain, director and co-writer, tries to intrigue the viewers with a science fiction movie bursting of spectacular battles between the alien creature and the Vikings, using often atrocious violence, a strong story, adrenaline and good quality performances. The battles take place in extremely beautiful sceneries and settings that really take the viewer back to ancient Norway. As it seems, the producers spent a lot of money to give us this movie.

James Caviezel is great in his role as the stoic redeemer of humanity. And he is not the only one. John Hurt gives the notion that he is really one of the Vikings, playing the wise leader with great easiness and no effort. On the other hand, Huston seems to be the most proper person to play the role of the savage that got bored of being second in command leader. Sofia Myles is also great as a female warrior who uses swords with great convenience.

No one believed that an alliance between Vikings and aliens against a fierce creature could end up being so amusing. The final judgment is yours. If you enjoy this kind of films, Outlander is a movie you should definitely watch.
