What to consider when you are thinking about a career move

According to an African aphorism, "you cannot get a good view of a masquerade by staying in one position". Now, this expression may lose some its meaning in translation but the fact remains that life is dynamic. Therefore, when it comes to careers, the guy that keeps his options open will probably have a much better deal then the one that sticks to just one career.

So, if you are considering a career move, you will do well to bear the following in mind.

1. Marketability

You want to make a career more right? What skills and qualifications do you have? How will you fit into the new place you are thinking go? Are you in touch with current trends in that profession? Simply put, how marketable are you? This is the very first thing that you have to consider.

2. Prospects:

Unless your name is John the Baptist who was content to eat locusts and wild honey you are making a career move in your own interest. Therefore, you have to consider the career prospects available to you. Will you make more money? Are there prospects for promotion? What about job security and a pension plan? All these should be given serious consideration before you make your move.

3. Your Age:

These days, quite a number of career choices have a sell-by date. So, you have to consider your age vis-vis the career you are looking at. If you are too old to fit in, don't go there.

4. Relevance:

It is a fact that some careers have more relevance to society than others. If this is true, then it follows that you ought to aim for a career that does not ever go out of style. If you want to make a career move to an outfit that manufactures manual typewriters, you ought to have your head examined.

5. Natural Inclination:

The guy that invented the aptitude test had to be a towering genius. You see, you simply cannot fall in love with a career for purely financial reasons. You need to find a career that suits you. Experience has shown that people do better in a career where they have the natural talent. So, you have to look at this factor as well before you change your career.

6. Family Life:

If you are married and you have children, your life is no longer your own. Before making any career move, you should consider the impact that career may have on your family life. A career that may potentially cost you your marriage should be avoided at all cost.

Finally, you have to understand very clearly that the business of life is not business but living. If you want to make a career move, choose carefully and make the very best career move that you can. This is the sensible thing to do.
